Apple Gives Corning Money to Develop Better iPhone Screens

Apple has awarded display manufacturer Corning an extra $45 million in funding. This funding will be put towards research and development into new technologies for iPhone displays that Corning will supply.

Apple Funds Corning an Extra $45 Million

Corning has been awarded the $45 million in funding from Apple's Advanced Manufacturing Fund. This is a $5 billion fund that was set up in 2017. Apple describes the fund as one to "foster and support the innovative production and high-skill jobs that will help fuel a new era of technology-driven manufacturing".

Apple's press release states that the funding will be used to expand Corning's US manufacturing capacity, and fund research and development into new technologies for the iPhone display.

In particular, the research into new technologies will aim at improving durability and product life. Apple is focusing on this area in particular both to give users a better product, and to help environmental sustainability.

Over the past four years, Apple has awarded Corning $450 million from the Fund. This funding has gone to create over 1,000 jobs across Corning's US operations, and the research led to the Ceramic Shield display which was featured on the iPhone 12 lineup announced in 2020.

How Will Apple's Funding of Corning Affect You?

As we've already seen from the creation of the Ceramic Shield display, Apple's funding can help Corning bring some exciting innovations to display technologies.

By improving the display durability, not only are you going to receive a device that's more resistant to damage, but the product will help to reduce environmental waste. If displays are more resistant to damage, it's pretty clear they're not going to need repairing or replacing as much.

Not only does this skip out the waste of the old display, it also saves on the production of the new one, and the process of repairing the device. With Apple's recent push to be more environmentally conscious, this is clearly another big step in that direction.

Of course there's the added benefit that you won't need to pay for replacement parts or repairs for broken screens. If the displays are improved enough in the coming years, you might not even need to purchase cases or screen protectors.

Your Next iPhone Might Have a Newly Developed Display

Each new iPhone boasts some upgrades over its predecessors. However, some of these upgrades are so minor that many people skip upgrading their phones. A new, and much-improved display, would likely be a big selling point for those users currently holding onto their phones for longer than Apple would like.

Regardless, it's great to see Apple funding further innovation into its products, and the positive environmental impact is encouraging too.
