HBO Max is releasing a cheaper subscription tier in June. You'll be able to grab the subscription for the lower price of $9.99/month. However, you will have to watch ads to get this new tier.
HBO Max Is Releasing A Cheaper Subscription Tier
WarnerMedia announced the new HBO Max subscription tier in a press release.
The new plan is called HBO Max with Ads, and will show viewers ads when they're watching content. The new tier will cost $9.99/month rather than the usual $14.99/month.
Contrary to what you may expect, viewers won't miss out on much with the cheaper tier. HBO Max with Ads will include access to all existing and future content on the platform.

However, there is one small exception. Viewers with the cheaper subscription won't be able to watch the films HBO releases on the platform and in cinemas until a later date. HBO will still let viewers watch the films when they get added to the platform sometime after release, just not while the films are still in cinemas.
Current HBO Max subscribers will see the option to downgrade their account to the new ad-free tier when it's released. New subscribers will get to choose between the tiers when they first sign up for the platform.
We previously reported on the possibility of an ad-supported HBO Max tier, and those rumors turned out to be true. For now, neither of the other HBO subscription services will show ads or offer a cheaper tier.
What Ads Will You See On HBO Max?
In the same press release, WarnerMedia outlined the ad formats that will be on offer to advertisers. From this, we can learn that there are three main types of ads you might see on the new HBO Max tier.
At launch, HBO Max with Ads will allow advertisers to show Brand Blocks, where brands can own a block of content shown to viewers. WarnerMedia will soon also offer brands Pause Ads and Branded Discovery (which is essentially a show in a promoted spot) as alternative ways to show ads to viewers.
HBO Max with Ads will join Hulu as a service offering a lower tier with ads to viewers. Some existing streaming services, such as Amazon Prime Video, already show ads for their own content without advertising this to subscribers. It'll be nice to benefit from having to watch these ads, even if there are some from brands.
Get HBO Max a Little Cheaper With Ads
Paying for multiple streaming services can quickly add up. By introducing a cheaper subscription tier for HBO Max, viewers can keep up with their favorite shows for less money. Plus, viewers will get mostly the same experience as with a normal plan.
