How to Get Personalized Recommendations on Android TV

Android TV has a Discover tab, which includes personalized recommendations, as well as movies and TV shows that are trending on Google Search.

The addition of this new feature forms part of an Android TV update by Google to make Android TV look more like the new Google TV software.

If you're struggling to know what to watch on Android TV, here's how to get and improve your personalized recommendations.

What Are Personalized Recommendations on Android TV?

In April 2021, Android TV added three new tabs to its home screen interface: Home, Discover and Apps. The new tabs can be accessed from the top menu.

The Discover tab displays your personalized recommendations, helping you browse and enjoy content that may be of interest to you based on your activity.

It's similar in design to the For You tab on the Chromecast with Google TV. It gives you personalized suggestions for movies, TV shows, and live TV based on what you watch and what's trending on Google.

How to Get Personalized Recommendations on Android TV

To get personalized recommendations on Android TV, simply navigate to the Discover tab. Here you can explore movies, shows and live TV that is recommended for you based upon your Google apps and subscriptions.

You can also check out the Top picks for you section that shows your personalized recommendations, the Trending TV shows section to see what others are watching, and the New movies and shows section to find new content that may be of interest to you.

What Determines the Recommendations on Android TV?

To decide what to show you in Discover, Google uses information from your device and other Google products, as well as the data stored in your Google Account. This data is based on settings you can change or turn on or off, which may include:

  • Web and app activity
  • App info from your devices
  • Contact info from your devices
  • Location history and settings. Some updates in Discover are shown based on your home location. If your home location isn't available, Google will estimate your location based on other sources, like your IP address.

How You Can Improve Your Recommendations on Android TV

Watch more of the shows you enjoy; this will teach Android TV what you like. Android TV then uses this information to recommend similar shows that may be of interest to you. This is the best way to discover content that you are more likely to watch.

To improve the recommendations Android TV gives you from your Google activity, follow the steps below.

First, you need to turn on Web & App Activity:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your Google app.
  2. Tap More and then select Your data in Search.
  3. Under Google-wide controls, tap Web & App activity.
  4. Turn on Web & App Activity.

You can then choose to follow new topics, unfollow other topics, stop getting stories from certain topics or sources, and bring back the stories or topics you removed.

When browsing the Google feed, tap the heart icon on the bottom right-hand side of cards to show that you like them. This teaches Google that you're interested in the topic, which will then fuel your Android TV recommendations.

Content That Is Tailored for You

As the demand for streaming continues to rise, more companies are geared towards giving you a personalized, quick, and hassle-free experience online. Android TV's Discover tab does just that, and is hopefully one of many improvements to come from the company.
