How Different Is the Apple Watch Series 7 From the Watch Series 6?

Apple’s annual September launch event revealed the latest addition to its acclaimed smart wearable lineup—the Apple Watch Series 7. As expected, the Apple Series 7 is a step up from its predecessors and makes an even stronger case for the Apple Watch to be the best smartwatch around.

The Apple Watch Series 6 was one of the most successful and popular models, so it’s only natural that we stack up the latest Apple smartwatch with its predecessor. Read on as we discuss whether the Apple Watch 7 is worth the upgrade.

Apple Watch Series 7: First Thoughts

At first glance, the new Apple Watch 7 seems quite similar to its predecessor, the Apple Watch 6, but some improvements await if you decide to upgrade. In contrast to the rumors that Apple would completely overhaul the design, the new Series 7 only has minimal changes to its overall design.

The screen is bigger on the Apple Watch Series 7 but not big enough to make it look too different. It also comes in fresh, never-before-seen colors and charges much quicker.

Design and Display

The Apple Watch Series 7 features the largest ever screen in an Apple Watch, coupled with 40% thinner borders. All the rumors surrounding a complete redesign proved false, and the new Apple Watch 7 doesn’t look very different compared to the Apple Watch Series 6.

Apple Watch 7 does, however, have 20% more screen area thanks to the thinner borders. Moreover, the Always-On Retina on the Apple Watch Series 7 is much brighter when compared to the Watch Series 6. According to Apple, the Watch Series 7 is 70% brighter than its predecessor, a claim that almost sounds too good to be true.

The new display also wraps slightly around the edges of the Apple Watch Series 7. This gives it the appearance of an even larger display and even allows you to see some details—like clock numbers—from the side of the Apple Watch.

You can grab the Apple Watch Series 7 in either the 41mm variant or the 45mm variant. In contrast, the Apple Watch 6 had 40mm and 44mm versions.

The casing on the Watch Series 7 has received a significant redesign. Apple Watch Series 7 will have unprecedented crack resistance and is the first Apple Watch to get an IP6X dust resistance certification.

Battery Life

Despite Apple’s claims of improved battery life in the Apple Watch 6, the S6 chipset failed to live up to its expectations of longer battery life. The Apple Watch Series 7 will have the same 18-hour battery life as the Watch Series 6, but it does have 33% faster charging, in part thanks to the new USB-C charging cable.

Colors

Apple has announced five colors for the aluminum version of the Apple Watch Series 7—starlight, green, blue, midnight, and Product (RED). The stainless-steel models are available in gold, silver, and graphite, whereas the titanium models offer natural or space black choices.

This time around, Apple has also released a luxury end Hermes Watch band and a refreshed Nike Sport Loop, available in different colors. Another essential feature is that the new Apple Watch Series 7 will be backward compatible with watch bands of previous Apple Watch Series generations.

Features

The Apple Watch Series 7 does not bring any significant upgrades in terms of features compared to the Watch Series 6. The Health and wellness features of both generations are pretty much the same. Sleep tracking, blood oxygen monitoring, ECG tracking, and fall tracking are standard in Watch Series 6 and Series 7.

The Watch Series 7, however, does come with a new fall detection feature for cyclists and an enhanced GPS-tracking system for e-bikes.

Price and Release

The Apple Watch Series 7 starts at $399 for the Wi-Fi model and $499 for the cellular option. The Apple Watch Series 6 had the same starting price as well. Depending on the casing and strap you choose, the price will vary.

Apple has not given a definite release date for its Watch Series 7, and all we know is that it will release somewhere in fall 2021.

The Apple Watch Series 7 Fails to Impress

Apple’s Watch Series 7 is not very different from the Watch Series 6, with only minimal upgrades that haven’t impressed a lot of people.

If you’re an Apple Watch Series 6 user, upgrading to Watch Series 7 won’t offer any significant changes. On the other hand, if you’re using an older Apple Watch, it might be a good idea to upgrade once the Watch Series 7 gets released.
