The iPhone 14: Everything We Know So Far

Apple released the iPhone 13 series at its California Streaming event on September 14, 2021. While Apple's 2021 iPhone lineup is still pretty new, rumors of the upcoming iPhone 14 are already heating up.

Like its predecessors, the next version up is expected to bring several exciting new features to the table. Here's everything we know so far about the iPhone 14.

The iPhone 14 Lineup and Release Date

Even though Apple's different iPhone 13 models are fresh on the market, rumors have circulated because of massive changes expected to come.

Apple will supposedly unveil four new devices. The four include two 6.1-inch and two 6.7-inch models.

As for the official announcement, Apple normally releases its new iPhones around September. So, we can expect a September 2022 launch.

iPhone 14 Design

While the iPhone 13 series didn't feature any major design changes, that could change with the iPhone 14. However, the flat-edged design, first featured in the iPhone 12, may stay around for another year.

According to a March 2021 report by well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo via MacRumors, Apple will ditch the notch on some of its iPhones come 2022. But if things change for the better, the entire lineup could adopt the design.

The display notch, introduced in 2017, has been around for quite some time, housing Face ID hardware and the front-facing camera. By ditching the notch, Apple will reportedly place Face ID equipment under the display.

On the other hand, Apple will move the front-facing camera to a centered hole punch cutout at the top of the panel—similar to what we've seen on lots of Android devices.

Apple could also remove the rear camera bump and making it flush with the rear glass back. That would mean your iPhone won't wobble when put on a flat surface.

Renders have also tipped on the probability of Apple including a stronger more robust: a first for the iPhone. However, it won't be the first time Apple has used a titanium chassis on a consumer product. The titanium chassis is also available on the most expensive variant of the Apple Watch Series 7.

The company may introduce round volume rockers (like those on the iPhone 4 and 5), plus redesigned speaker and microphone grills.

iPhone 14 Camera

We don't know much about the iPhone 14's camera setup at the time of writing. However, if history is anything to go by, expect a slew of new features. iPhone 13 series added a handful, and the iPhone 14 series will likely be no different.

Some of the rumored upgrades in the camera department include a 48-megapixel lens on the pro models, a major jump from the usual 12MP. The pro models might also have 8K recording capabilities, an improvement from the current 4K limit on the iPhone 13 series.

iPhone 14 Chip and Modem

Each new generation of the iPhone features a chip upgrade. The iPhone 13 launched with the A15 Bionic, and the iPhone 14 is expected to run on the A16 Bionic.

The A16 Bionic could be paired with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X65 modem, enabling the iPhone 14 to support satellite connectivity.

If included, iPhone users will send short messages and report issues when cellular connectivity is unavailable. Satellite connectivity on the iPhone is expected to debut in 2022 at the earliest.

The iPhone 14 Is Coming

The iPhone 13 was a minor upgrade compared to its predecessor. But moving forward, the iPhone 14 could feature some of the most drastic changes in the device's history.

Of course, the launch is still miles away—so what we currently know is limited. More will no doubt come out over the coming months, so until then, let's all enjoy and get used to the iPhone 13!
